COLUMBUS, Ga. - MSM (ret) George H. Hamill,
83, of Columbus, GA passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2011 in Montgomery, AL.
A graveside service with military honors was held at 3 p.m., Saturday October 8, 2011 in Parkhill Cemetery according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907.
CSM Hamill was born at Fort Banks, MA on January 5, 1928. He was the oldest son of the late George and Abbie Hamill and the widower of Jean C. Hamill who passed away on February 11, 1992. His brother, Roy Hamill, also preceded him in death.
He was raised in Newport, RI and attended schools there.
He enlisted in the US Army on July 3, 1946 at Fort Banks, MA and retired on August 1, 1976 at Fort Carson, CO completing over 30 years of service. During his long military career he served on the Army’s Leadership Board in 1971 and was the Division Command Sergeant Major for the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea in 1973-1974.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Hamill of Columbus, stepson, Beldy Massey, stepdaughter, Linda Johnson, his sisters, Barbara Platt, Eleanor Pollitt of Newport, RI, Juanita Rae Branham of Ladson, SC, Helen Hospador of Forest Park, IL, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
