W. Vincent Cooney
NEWPORT - W. Vincent (Vin) Cooney,
98, formerly of South Drive, Middletown, died Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Village House in Newport.
Vincent was born in Newport, RI, on April 9, 1913 to the late Mary E. (O’Flaherty) and William A. Cooney.
He graduated from St. Augustin Grammar School and De La Salle Academy where he was the captain of the basketball team. Vin continued to play basketball at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and graduated in 1936.
Vin never tired of telling stories about growing up in Newport, particularly the Fifth Ward. He was also a founding member of Gooseberry Beach.
He worked as a construction foreman for New England Telephone Company for 35 years before retiring in 1974.
Vin was a veteran of World War II, served under General MacArthur in the 68th Army Signal Corp as a Master Sergeant in Guam and the Philippines.
Vin is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary E. (Boylan) Cooney and his five children, Mary E. Oliveira and her husband Charles of Middletown, Nancy E. Oliveira and her husband Antone of Newport, Rita Cooney-Brown and her husband Don Brown of Upton, MA, William V. Cooney, Jr. and his wife Margaret Palmer of Sewalls Point, FL and Newport, and John Cooney and his wife Jennifer of Lake Worth, FL, 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Bryan Cooney, Rita Whitford, and Marguerite Babcock.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at St. Augustin Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown.
