Eileen P. OReilly
NEWPORT - Eileen P. O’Reilly, 94, of Newport died peacefully at home with her family on Saturday, October 15, 2011. She was the wife of the late Eugene J. O’Reilly who passed away in 2008 after 70 years of marriage.
Born in Newport on December 10, 1916, she was the daughter of James T. and Elizabeth Coyle O’Connell. She is survived by her children: J. Timothy O’Reilly of Portsmouth, Sheila Young of Reading, MA, Eileen Daschbach of Lyme, NH, Brian O’Reilly of Newport, Kevin O’Reilly of San Rafael, CA, William O’Reilly of Middletown, Mary Dema of St. Croix, USVI, Alice O’Reilly of Newport and Elizabeth Lennon of Alta, UT and their spouses, Dorothy O’Reilly, Joseph Daschbach, Barbara O’Reilly and John Dema. Two sons, Eugene John O’Reilly and Joseph O’Reilly and her son-in-law Bill Lennon predeceased her.
She leaves 20 grandchildren: Trish Onofrio, John O’Reilly, Paul O’Reilly, Jamo O’Reilly, Liz Young, Christine Young, Kenny Young, Danny Young, Gene-O Young, Mary Daschbach, Ellen Daschbach, John Daschbach, Kevin O’Reilly, Ingrid O’Reilly, Sophie O’Reilly, Josephine O’Reilly, Briana Dema, John Dema, Nola Ganem and Jacob Ganem. Her 11 great grandchildren are Jack Onofrio, Ben Onofrio, Lucas O’Reilly, Ella O’Reilly, Sammy Young, Katarina Young, Abby Young, Sarah Young, Michael Young, Katie Young, and Ella Assamouro. She also leaves her sister Elizabeth Rooney of Middletown and was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Walsh of Newport.
She attended Rogers High School, the College of New Rochelle and Katherine Gibbs School in New York City. After raising her family, she wrote travel books on Ireland and Great Britain. She also published a book of poems about Newport that she collected.
She was one of the first two women elected to the Board of the Newport YMCA, and a former Board member of the Newport Historical Society, the Newport Irish Heritage Society, Redwood Library, Christmas in Newport, and The Preservation Society of Newport County.
She and her husband traveled widely in this country and Europe. Her grandchildren liked telling people that their grandmother did back-flips from the diving board. She first skied downhill at age 42 and enjoyed the slopes until she was 83. She also loved books and libraries, and the study of Newport and Irish history.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI.
A private family burial will follow at a later date. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from 4-7 p.m. in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory made to the Newport Historical Society, 82 Touro Street, Newport, RI; The Women’s Resource Center, 114 Touro Street, Newport, RI; or Hospice Care at the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport & Bristol Counties, 1184 E. Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, would be appreciated.
