PORTSMOUTH - Joseph Moreira,
87, of Quaker Hill Lane, Portsmouth, RI, died Friday, April 1, 2011 at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI.
He was the husband of Alice (Linhares) Moreira.
Born in Fall River, MA on October 18, 1923, he was the son of the late Manuel and Virginia (Botelho) Moreira.
Joe was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Force as an Aerial Gunner on a B-17 Bomber with the 8th Air Force. He flew 33 missions over Europe including the Normandy Invasion. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After his military service, he was employed by Alden Corrugated Co. of New Bedford, MA as a plant superintendent for 41 years.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by his daughter, Carole A. Kenney and her husband, Randy, of Hopkinton, NH; his brother, Jesse Moreira of Fall River, MA; his sister, Dorothy Mello of Tiverton, RI; and his three grandchildren, Andrea Kenney, Matthew Kenney and Graham Kenney.
He was the brother of the late Louis Moreira and Lolo Moreira.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.
A graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. in Pocasset Hill Cemetery in Tiverton.
