Barbara M. McCarthy
NEWPORT - Barbara M. McCarthy,

79, of Newport RI, died on Sunday, April 10, 2011 surrounded by her family after a short illness.
She was the wife of the late John F. McCarthy.
Born in Providence Rhode Island on February 17, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Helen (Lynch) Haggis.
She moved to Newport in 1941 and attended Newport Public Schools and graduated from Rogers High School in 1950. She worked for the Newport School Department for 20 years in the Grant Programs Office and as a secretary at Rogers High School. She also worked at the Newport County Mental Health Center in Middletown.
Barbara was a devout member of Saint Mary’s Church where she was a past president of St. Mary’s Guild. She was also a member of the Edward King Center. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking treats for her grand dogs. She also enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She had a wonderful outlook on life and a great sense of humor. She will always be remembered for her constant smile and generous nature. Her generosity extends beyond her death with her gift to science.
All who knew her will miss her.
She is survived by her five children; JoAnne Cassese and her husband Michael of Middletown, Patricia Channel and her husband Ralph of Suisun City, California, David McCarthy and his fiancé Jane Lauth of Tiverton, John McCarthy and his wife Cinara of Hawthorne, New Jersey, and Nancy Costello and her husband Christopher of Middletown.
There are seven grandchildren, Shannon Williams and Patrick McCarthy, Michael Cassese, Christopher Channel and Jennifer Channel, Rebecca Costello and Cecilia Costello. She also leaves five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, Richard Haggis and his wife Dorothy of Newport and John Haggis of Middletown, and a brother-in-law James McClanahan of Trenton, New Jersey also survive her.
Her sister Dorothy (Haggis) McClanahan and her sister-in-law Marcia Haggis predeceased her.
In accordance with Barbara’s wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral. She has donated her body to the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University Anatomical Gift Program.
A memorial service will be held at Saint Mary’s Church on Spring Street, on Friday June 10, 2011 at 10 a.m.
