Althea Gillies
MIDDLETOWN - Althea Babe Gillies,

95, formerly of Longmeadow Avenue, Middletown, RI died on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at South Bay Manor in South Kingstown, RI.
She was the widow of the late Frederick M. Gillies, her childhood sweetheart.
Althea was born in Newport on June 7, 1915 to David A. and Althea (Pearson) Buckley and graduated from Rogers High School in 1933.
Althea was the first woman to become a licensed journeyman plumber in the State of RI. Her career included: the Finance Department of Newport City Hall, Western Union, and Howard Construction. From 1966 until her retirement she worked in the State of RI Department of Human Services.
Althea was an active member of the community. She was a member of the Newport Hospital Auxiliary; on the Board of the R I Girl Scouts; a member of the Newport County Republican Women; secretary of the Newport Republican City Committee and helped start the Federation of Republican Women. She joined the Mosaic Club in 1940 and remained a lifelong member. She was one of the original Board Members of the Edward King House Senior Center and served for 27 years as well as volunteering as a receptionist two days a week until she was 93.
Althea was a real people person! She enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and meeting new people. She was a gracious hostess. She took great joy in sending birthday and special occasion cards to her many friends and acquaintances. She was an avid bridge player. She loved all types of music especially when she could sing along.
Althea is survived by her daughters, Sandra A. Rodrigues of Narragansett, RI and Martha A. Hultgren and her husband Hal of Charlestown, RI; her son Carl F. Gillies and his wife Dana of Belmont, NH; grandchildren Thomas J. Rodrigues III and his wife Susan; Ellen K. Rego and her husband Kenneth; Gretchen I. Barnes and her husband Christopher; and Eric C. Hultgren and his wife Brenda.
Her grandson Carl F. Gillies, Jr. predeceased her.
She also leaves six great-grandchildren: Thomas Rodrigues IV, Lily A. Rodrigues, Trevor A. Hultgren, Connor A. Hultgren, Ella C. Hultgren and Kathryn G. Barnes.
Babe said I have had a full and in most cases a happy life. Lots of wonderful memories of good friends, family and good times.
Her Funeral Service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11 a.m. with burial following in the churchyard.
Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
