Joseph F. Lindsay
MIDDLETOWN - Joseph F. Lindsay,
age 93, of Middletown, RI, died Friday, December 31, 2010 in the Forest Farm Health Care Center.
He was the husband of the late Julia (Sylvia) Lindsay.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was a son of the late Charles and Ellen “Ella” (Magner) Lindsay. He attended High School in Philadelphia and then entered the Naval Reserve. He was a former resident of the West House in Middletown and lived on East Road in Tiverton.
Mr. Lindsay retired from the United States Navy as Machinist’s Mate First Class after 20 years of service. After retirement he entered civil service in 1964 and worked at the Naval Regional Medical Center as a food handler before being promoted to Supervisor of the food management service until 1981.
While in the United States Navy he served aboard the USS Niblack DD424 during World War II in the North Atlantic Convoys and the European invasion and in the Pacific until the end of the war. He was a recipient of the American Campaign Medal, European-African Middle Eastern campaign Medal with 5 stars, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also a member of the D.A.V. and the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 19, Newport.
He is survived by his daughter Donna J. Almeida and her husband William of Portsmouth, RI, one son Richard J. Lindsay of Florida, two grandchildren Richard J. Lindsay Jr. of Portsmouth, RI and Ashley V. Lindsay of Florida, and several nieces and nephews including Robert Lindsay and his wife Mary Alice of Jim Thorpe, PA, and Barbara Llewllyn and her husband Tim of Tiverton, RI.
He was brother of the late James, Edward, and Harold Lindsay. He was uncle of the late Peggy Ann Waltz.
His funeral will be held Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 9 a.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River, MA followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 am. at St. Madeline’s Church, 35 Lake Road, Tiverton, RI. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton, RI.
Visiting hours Friday, January 7, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m.
