Dr. Raymond L. Picozzi
NEWPORT - Dr. Raymond Lewis Picozzi,

83, of Kay Street, Newport, died Monday January 10, 2011 at the Newport Hospital.
He was the husband of Alberta (Turcone) Picozzi.
Born in Providence, RI on March 1, 1927, he was a son of the late Anthony and Antonetta (Conte) Picozzi.
He received his AB from Providence College in 1949 and his M.Ed. and Ed.D. from Boston University in 1953 and 1961. He was employed as a professor at RI College from 1961-1997. From 1961-1970 he taught in the College Department of Elementary Education and held a joint appointment from 1971-1977 in the Department of Elementary Education and in Communication and Theater. For 14 years he served as department chair, first of the Department of Communication and Theater and later as chair of the newly joined Department of Theater and Dance. During the 1970s he served as director of the college’s children’s theater program and in 1981 he became the director of the college’s musical theater performance program and directed numerous productions over 15 years.
In addition to teaching and directing he was known locally, regionally, and nationally for his publication, workshops, and seminal leadership and for directing various other college and senior center productions and projects.
Following his retirement from Rhode Island College, he served as an adjunct professor at Salve Regina University in the Theater Department where he also directed several theatrical productions.
He was past president of the board of the Friends of Newport Public Library and was also the past president of the board of VINE (Volunteers in Newport Education). He loved gardening and was a member of the Newport Horticultural Society. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish where he served as a lecture and in the religious education program for many years.
Besides his wife he is survived by his sons David A. Picozzi and his wife Jennifer of Newport, Christopher A. Picozzi and his wife Megan of Scituate, and John E. Picozzi and his wife Laura of Tiverton; his brother Dexter A. Picozzi of Reading, CT; and his grandchildren Jacob A. Picozzi, Lilly Catherine Picozzi, and Emma Kathleen Rose Picozzi.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2011 from 4-8 p.m. in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI.
Donations may be made, in Raymond’s memory, to the St. Mary’s Church Endowment Fund, to the Friends of Newport Public Library, or to Volunteers in Newport Education.
