Evelyn M. Smith
MIDDLETOWN - Evelyn Mae Smith,
89, of Colony Drive, Middletown, RI, died Friday, January 7, 2011 at Heatherwood Nursing Center, Newport, RI.
She was the wife of the late William A Smith.
Born in Fall River, MA on October 9, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John Ernest and Myra (Leeming) Wilde.
Evelyn grew up in New Bedford, and married William A. Smith in 1947.
For several years, Evelyn volunteered as a Gray Lady at the Newport Naval Hospital. She enjoyed flowers and won the Julia A. Berwin Award for seven consecutive years for her window boxes on her home on Parker Avenue. Evelyn also enjoyed her time with friends at the Monday afternoon bowling league where she was active for many years and winning several trophies. After William's retirement, the couple delighted in traveling the world, taking several trips to Europe, the Mediterranean and many cruises.
Her daughter Donna A. Fucile and her husband John “Jack” Fucile of Wellborn, FL, her grandson John W. Jeffrey of Windham, NH, and her great-grandchildren Connor and Caitlin Jeffrey survive her.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 17, 2011 from 2-4 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
Burial will be on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 9 a.m. in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.
