Susan M. Cassady
GAINESVILLE, Va. - Susan M. (Barkman) Cassady,

resident of Gainesville and Freedom, NH, died at home with her family in Virginia on Monday, June 21, 2010 having succumbed to cancer.
Susan is survived by her beloved husband of 42 years, Col. David J. Cassady, USMC (Ret.); mother, Madeline (Barkman) Willey of MA; brother, John Barkman and wife, Julianne of MA; daughter, Jennifer Hoffman and husband, David of OH; son, David and wife, Gloria of NC; son, Gregory of VA; daughter, Amy Wassenberg and husband, Gregory of VA; and son, Joseph of RI. Additionally, 12 grandchildren, Caly, Cass, David, Suzi, Marisa, Amanda, Diana, Rebeca, Steven, Joel, Colin, and Erin survive Susan.
Born in Leominster, MA in 1940, Sue was trained as a nurse at Worchesterís Memorial Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1961. She later joined the Navy-serving during the Vietnam era. After her service, she transitioned into civilian life as a nurse and administrator working for hospitals in VA, NC, and RI. She went back to college later and earned a degree in nursing in 1992 from St. Josephís College in Maine. After more than 30 years of working at a job she loved in nursing, Sue began a second career coordinating and facilitating installations of medical software in hospitals across the country. Over the years she formed life-long relationships with friends and coworkers that she cherished greatly and who expanded her family.
The center of Susanís life was her family. All was right in her world if her children and grandchildren were safe and happy. She and Dave traveled up and down the East Coast in an effort to keep in contact with each of her children and remind them of the importance of family and the limitless power of their love. Some of the best moments in Susanís life occurred at the family cabin in Freedom, NH, where most of the New Yearsí for the past thirty years were spent. Surrounded by, and some would say, inundated with family, she was in her glory. Managing activities, menus, grandkids, and her husband-Susan loved those times most of all.
A viewing will be held at Mountcastle Funeral Home, Dale City, VA, today, June 24, 2010 from 5-8 p.m.
This will be followed on Friday, June 25, by a memorial service in the Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle, VA, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30p.m. and the burial at the Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA, at 1:30 p.m.
Flowers are appreciated, but the family asks that a donation be made to the American Cancer Society in Susanís name.
