Walter J. Simpson
MIDDLETOWN - Walter J. Simpson,

92, of Middletown, died Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.
He was the loving husband of the late Alice Padykula of Central Falls, RI.
Born on April 6, 1918 in Linden, NJ, he was the son of the late Ethel Norton and William Edward Simpson.
Mr. Simpson was a WWII Veteran and served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years from 1939 to 1959, retiring at the rate of Chief Photographer’s Mate. During his Navy career Mr. Simpson was proud of his service on the Heavy Cruiser USS Quincy, and the Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger. Mr. Simpson also participated in the Navy’s Atomic Bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946. After retiring from the Navy he worked for the Raytheon Company in Portsmouth, RI where he ran the photo lab. Upon retirement Mr. Simpson loved playing golf, fishing, gardening, and enjoyed running an antique store with his wife Alice. Both he and Alice enjoyed attending area Polish Picnics and dancing the Polka.
Mr. Simpson was also very active with the Middletown Knights of Columbus and served as a past Grand Knight. He was a parishioner of St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown and a longtime member of Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth.
He is survived by his two sons, Walter John Simpson, Jr. of Carlsbad, CA and Brian P. Simpson of North Kingstown, RI; and his 5 grandsons, Mark Simpson of Orlando, FL, David and Steven Simpson of West Warwick, RI, and Travis and Clayton Simpson of Carlsbad, CA.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 9 a.m., at St. Lucy’s Church, West Main Road, Middletown. Burial, with military honors at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
