Eugene P. Fucile
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Eugene Paul Fucile
died peacefully in South Burlington, Vermont on Sunday, February 21, 2010, surrounded by his family.
He was born to John J. and Concetta Quattrucci Fucile in Newport, RI on June 27, 1939. He was a 1957 graduate and senior class president at Rogers High School. Gene graduated in 1965 from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Industrial Engineering, where he was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta.
Gene attended Officer Candidate School and received his commission from the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps in 1965. He honorably served his country for 23 years. Over the course of his Naval career, Gene served two tours of duty in Vietnam with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 53; served as Aide to Rear Admiral John R. Fisher, Commander of the Pacific Fleet Seabees; and received his Masters degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Gene and his family served the Navy and forged lifelong friendships in Port Hueneme, California; Kingsville, Texas; Quonset Point, Rhode Island; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Norfolk, Virginia; Monterey, California; Washington, D.C.; and Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Upon retiring from the Navy as a commander, Gene moved to Vermont and worked in facilities management for Chittenden Bank for eight years, and with Salem Engineering for twelve years. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lynda Newman Fucile; his children, Martha of Reston, Virginia and Mark of Williston, Vermont; his father, John of Newport, RI; two brothers, Jack and his wife Donna of Wellborn, Florida and Norman and his wife Ellen of Middletown, RI; his sister, Elaine and her husband Anthony Faria of Portsmouth, RI; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends near and far.
Gene’s greatest joys were his family, his dogs, his beloved Red Sox, and people. Gene was rare in his ability to make even complete strangers feel like his friends, and was known for his ability to get along with anyone and for his great sense of humor.
The family would like to express their gratitude to everyone involved in the care and treatment of Gene over the course of his illness including his neighbors and friends, and especially to Gene’s wife, Lyn, for all of her loving care throughout his life, and particularly while he was ill.
A celebration of Gene’s life will be held this Saturday, February 27, 2010, 2:00-5:00 p.m., at the Doubletree Hotel in Burlington, Vermont.
