STOKESDALE, N.C. - Mary Greenman Rae,
82, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 in Stokesdale, NC.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria, VA. She will be interned at Arlington National Cemetery, alongside her husband, at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009.
A native of Annapolis, Maryland, Mary Rae was born on July 14, 1926, the daughter of the late Commodore William Garrett and Marion Pierce Greenman. She attended Newport News High School and graduated from Marjorie Webster Junior College. Mary led successful careers as a Navy Wife, Mother, and Grandmother. Especially remembered by her absolute love of life, compassion, grace, and innocence combined with candor; she had an extraordinary ability to light up a room and those around her.
Mary Rae lived a full and happy life and taught us to find the goodness in all of us and then act on it. You’ve got your orders, Mary. Go with fair winds and following seas.
Surviving are her children William C. Rae, III of Corinna, ME; Thomas Nelson Rae of Middletown, RI, Marianne Lennon Rae of Cooperstown, NY; and Carrie Rae Spencer and her husband, Brent, of Summerfield, NC; seven grandchildren John J. Donnelly, Mark E. Rae, Keith J. Potter, Caeli E. Morgado and her husband Robert, Jessica J. Shelton, Garrett R. and Lydia E. Spencer; and five great-grandchildren Katelynn M., Brooklynn E., and Connor J. Rae, and Aiden and Lillian Morgado.
She was preceded in death by her husband Captain William Clark Rae, Jr, and brothers William Garrett Greenman and Franklin Pierce Greenman.
