Walter Bender
WESTPORT, Mass. - Walter Bender,
aka “Walt,” “Sonny,” “Jadek,” age 74, of Westport, MA, died, Thursday, July 16, 2009 in Charlton Memorial Hospital.
He was the husband of Mary (Byron) Bender with whom he would have celebrated 52 years of marriage on Monday.
Born in New Bedford, MA, a son of the late Walter Bender and Stella (Krupa) Jacquel, he spent his youth in Fall River being raised by his grandparents John and Barbara “Babci” Krupa then lived in Swansea for 20 years before moving to Westport in 1978.
A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, class of 1952 and the former Bradford Durfee Technical School now UMASS Dartmouth, class of 1956, he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. A Veteran of the United States Air Force, he was also employed as a Mechanical Engineer and Production Manager at the Newport Naval Base for 32 years before retiring in 1989.
Mr. Bender was a member of the Professional Mechanical Engineers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, The New England Hosta Society, and the Paskamansett Bird Club in Dartmouth. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, bird watching, and most of all spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three children, John B. Bender and his wife Cheryl L. of Acushnet, Karen L. MacDonald of Eastham, and Paul T. Bender of Northboro, one sister Rosemary Mrocka of Freetown, one brother Raymond Jacquel, six grandchildren and a large extended family.
He was brother of the late Ruth Jacquel.
His visiting hours will be held Monday, July 20, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River, MA. Relatives and friends invited.
