David E. Del Nero
NEWPORT - David E. Del Nero, Sr.,

88, of Newport, RI, died Friday, December 17, 2010 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport.
He was the husband of the late Julienne (Marshall) Del Nero who died in 1989.
Born in Newport over the family business, the former Valateria Cleaners at 474 Thames Street on April 14, 1922, he was a son of the late Paulo Anthony and Assunta (Messore) Del Nero.
David graduated from De La Salle Academy, class of 1941, attended London University and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. As a paratrooper he participated in the invasion of Europe on D Day with the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles. He made combat parachute insertions, one behind Utah Beach, and the other in Holland. David’s unit defended the town of Bastogne, Belgium, in December 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. For his actions Mr. Del Nero was awarded numerous decorations including the Bronze Star Medal, both French and Dutch Croix de Guerre and the Combat Infantry Badge. After returning from the war he worked at the Valateria Dry Cleaning, which was owned by his family. He later owned and operated the Metropolitan Cleaners on Spring Street for 34 years.
David was a past president of the Kiwanis here in Newport. He was also a Life Member of the Newport Lodge of Elks. He was past Commodore and Honorary Life Member of the Newport Yacht Club where he spent most of his time volunteering where needed always greeting new members and visitors.
David loved his family, friends and was very proud of his Italian heritage. He had a lifelong passion for sailing. He spent years sailing the Bahamas, Caribbean and U.S. coastal waters. David Del Nero had a wonderful life filled with love and respect by all that knew him.
He is survived by his children Sandra Good of Fairport, NY, Norman Del Nero-Bailey of Middletown, Dana Del Nero of Belmont, NH, David “Topper” Del Nero, Jr. of Newport and Deirdre Del Nero of Redondo Beach, CA; his brother, Vincent Del Nero of Newport; 7 grandchildren and 8 great- grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Joseph Del Nero, William Del Nero, Mary Underwood, and Paul Del Nero. He was the uncle of the late District Court Judge Paul J. Del Nero.
A burial with Military Honors will take place this spring at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport.
