PORTSMOUTH - Daniel R. Matthews,
88, of East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, died Saturday, December 25, 2010 at Heatherwood Nursing Home, Newport, RI.
He was the husband of the late Louise (Silvestri) Matthews.
Born in Portsmouth, RI on April 28, 1922, he was the son of the late John and Marie (Cabral) Mathias.
Mr. Matthews served in the United States Army. His primary career was a sheet metal worker, employed by Apollo Sheet Metal for many years. Daniel was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church and a member of the Newport Knights of Columbus #256.
He is survived by four sons Robert Burke of Lawnsdale, CA, Richard and Wayne Matthews, both of Portsmouth, RI, Daniel Matthews of Humbel, TX, and one daughter Mary Burke of Portsmouth, RI, as well as seven grandchildren, John Paul, Sarah, Chase, Brian, Shelby, and Hannah Matthews and Quinn Burke and 2 great-granddaughters Kara Matthews and Sophie Matthews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Joseph, Cyril, and Manuel Matthews, Gloria Napert, and Adeline Perry.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.
His funeral will be held on Friday, December 31, 2010, at 9 a.m. from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Columba's Cemetery in Middletown.
