Marguerite S. Murphy
NEWPORT - Marguerite S. “Peg” (Dunn) Murphy,
92, of Newport, RI, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at the St. Clare Home in Newport.
She was the wife of the late William F. Murphy.
Born in Newport on July 30, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Edward P. and Theresa (Sheehan) Dunn.
Peg was a graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1938. She was also a graduate of the former Posse-Nissen College. She worked as a physical education teacher at the former Elmhurst Academy in Portsmouth, Salve Regina College, and for over 50 years at the YMCA.
Peg was very athletic throughout her life. While in high school she was Captain of the girl’s basketball team, and an avid volleyball and tennis player. She was also an avid beach-goer and a lifelong parishioner of St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown.
She is survived by her son William F. Murphy, Jr. and his wife Susan of Middletown; her daughter Michaela A. Wojcik and her son Timothy Wojcik of Fairhaven, MA; her daughter-in-law Patricia S. Murphy of Middletown; her sister Ruth Judge and her husband Ed of Cherry Log, GA; two sisters-in-law Ruth Dunn and Doris Dunn both of Middletown, and many nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late James Patrick Murphy and sister of the late Edward P. Dunn, Jr., William J. Dunn, Dr. John D. “Jack” Dunn, Dr. James R. Dunn, Thomas D. Dunn, Natalie Crowe, and Claire M. Tittle.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 9 a.m., at St. Lucy’s Church, West Main Road, Middletown. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown.
Visiting hours will be held today, September 30, 2008, from 4-7 p.m. in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840.
