Kenneth J. Grinnell, Sr.
NEWPORT - Kenneth J. Grinnell, Sr.,

86, of Portsmouth died Saturday, January 5, 2008, at the Grand Islander Center.
He was born February 25, 1921 in Newport, the son of Charles LeRoy Grinnell and Mary Elizabeth (Peckham) Grinnell.
He was the husband of the late Janet A. (Spurr) Grinnell with whom he enjoyed fifty-five years of marriage.
Mr. Grinnell was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, having served from 1941-1947 in WWII in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres on the USSís Huntington, Panamint and West Point.
He was a 1938 graduate of BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, MA, and later attended MIT, URI and Brown University under the GI Bill, earning a Bachelorís Degree Equivalency in Electronics Engineering. During his career he was employed by the Central Torpedo Office (later Naval Underwater Systems Center), Avco and Raytheon. A Ham Radio Operator, W1RDH, he was a member of the Newport Radio Club and an active participant in the annual June Field Day. He was also Scoutmaster of Troop 1, Portsmouth, from 1965-69, and enjoyed accompanying the Troop to Camp Yawgoo in the summers. Mr. Grinnell was active for a time at St. Paulís Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, serving on the vestry and singing in the choir and also for a time in the US Power Squadron and the Masons. He most enjoyed time spent sailing the Sakonnet River.
Mr. Grinnell leaves his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth J. Grinnell, Jr. and Nicole T. Grinnell of Manchester, NH, his son James A. Grinnell of Portsmouth, six grandchildren, Lauren and Suzanne Carson, Michele and Brian Carson-Ames, and Renťe and Graham Grinnell, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
His daughter, Miriam Lynne Carson predeceased him.
There are no calling hours.
A private inurnment, graveside service and celebration of his life for family and friends will be held at a later date.
Arrangements were made through the Connors Funeral Home of Portsmouth, RI.
