MIDDLETOWN - Gunther G. Hausen,

72, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2007, at Rhode Island Hospital, surrounded by his wife Nicole, and two daughters, Françoise and Birgit.
Born December 15, 1934, in Munich, Germany, Gunther spent his childhood in his beloved Bavaria. He was the son of Helmuth Hausen, a well-known scientist, and his wife, Mathilde.
Gunther was a graduate of the Technische Hochschule in Hanover, Germany, where his father was a professor. In 1960, he came to the United States to study at MIT, where he graduated with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree. In 1963, he left the U.S. to return to Europe. Leaving from San Francisco, he traveled around the world for 6 months, accomplishing one of his life’s dreams. Later that year, he settled in Paris to study at the Sorbonne University, where he met his future wife, Nicole. He worked at the OECD (Organization for Economic & Cooperative Development), as a scientific engineer. In 1970, he left the OECD for the private sector and worked for AGIE in Switzerland. In 1978, he was transferred to Long Island, NY, to set up a manufacturing division for the company.
Gunther moved with his family to Middletown, RI in 1984, where he worked on a number of projects. As a Rotarian, he spearheaded the “Pure Water & Literacy Project for Cambodia,” which became one of his greatest accomplishments. He was a truly dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and humanitarian.
He is survived by his wife, Nicole Hausen, of Middletown; daughter, Françoise Everett and husband Peter of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Birgit Langmann and husband Vincent of Portland, OR; three granddaughters, Jasmine, Sophia, and Malia; and two brothers in Germany, Reinhard Hausen and Dr. Wilhelm Hausen.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2007, from 3-6 p.m. at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2007 at St. Columba’s Parish Hall, 55 Vaucluse Avenue, Middletown, RI.
Burial will be private.
