John B. Kelly, Sr.
SOUTH KINGSTOWN - John Bernard Barney Kelly, Sr.,

88, passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at South County Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was the beloved husband of the late Arlena Mills Kelly. They were married for 59 years. Born in Newport, RI, son of the late William and Katherine (Greene) Kelly. Mr. Kelly graduated from De La Salle Academy in Newport in 1936.
Prior to serving in WWII, Mr. Kelly worked at the Newport Torpedo Station. He served in the United States Coast Guard aboard the Cutter Eastwind and Nogak in the North Atlantic. Mr. Kelly retired from Quonset Point Naval Air Station after 25 years as an Aviation Metalsmith.
Mr. Kelly was a communicant of St. James Chapel in Charlestown where he served as lector for many years. He was a member of the American Society for Dowsers. He was an avid reader and enjoyed baking and gardening, but most enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his seven children, Katherine McCarty of St. Joseph, MI; Karen Roebuck of Wakefield, RI; Colleen Palazio of Smithfield, RI; Kristina Kelly-Shumate of Wakefield, RI; Karla Kelly-Prigmore of Danville, CA; John B. Kelly, Jr. of Charlestown, RI; and Michael Kelly of Durham, NC. Mr. Kelly has 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He was brother to the late Katherine Manning and Thomas and William Kelly.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, December 27, 2006, 4-7 p.m. at Forbes Funeral Home, 28 Columbia Street, Wakefield. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, December 28, 2006, at 10 a.m. in St. James Chapel, 2079 Matunuck School House Road, Charlestown, RI 02813, followed by a graveside service with full Military Honors at New Fernwood Cemetery in Kingston.
In recognition of the kindness and support for their father, the family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Visiting Nurse Services Home Health Services, 14 Woodruff Avenue, Suite 7, Narragansett, RI 02889 or South County Hospital (Cardiac Rehabilitation Center), 100 Kenyon Avenue, Wakefield, RI 02879.
