Betty Scott
ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. - Betty Chambliss Scott,
81, longtime resident of Newport, RI died January 19, 2006 at her home at Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, Florida following a long illness.
She was born November 6, 1924 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of U.S. Army Colonel Turner Mason Chambliss from Emporia, Virginia and Bernice Chambliss from Clifton Forge, Virginia. In 1945 she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia. Betty lived as an "Army Brat" and Navy wife traveling throughout the world and making her home in Hawaii, Norway and Turkey. She was active with the Navy Relief and many other volunteer programs, Altar Guilds at St. Andrew's Church in Arlington, VA, Trinity and St. George's Churches in Newport, RI, as well as Director of the Altar Guild for many years at St. Andrew's Church in New London, N.H. She enjoyed swimming, cross country skiing, horseback riding, golf,
along with being an avid reader and excelled in and enjoyed knitting,
needlepoint and cruel work. On March 6, 1946, she married Maylon Truxtun Scott (Captain, U.S. Navy retired) in Akron, Ohio. They raised their children for many of their years in Newport, RI and Virginia; moving to
Eastman in Grantham, NH in 1978 and staying in her beloved North Country home, "GloriBe", until 2002.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years; a son, Turner Scott of Newport, RI, daughters, Carol Leigh Roelker of Cincinnati, Ohio and Susan Martin of Woodbury, Vermont and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
