NEWPORT - Manuel F. Ferris, Sr.,
87, of 77 Pope Street, Newport, RI, died Sunday, February 19, 2006, at the Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Roselind Theresa (Benevides) Ferris.
Born in Newport, RI, on July 14, 1918, he was the son of the late James and Mary (Martin) Ferris.
Mr. Ferris had worked as a painter for the Newport Naval Station for 20 years, retiring in 1983. He had also worked as a painter and wallpaper hanger for Albert Smith Properties in Newport and for several years he also worked for Vanicek Nurseries. Mr. Ferris was a Veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII in the African-European Theatre. Mr. Ferris was an avid saltwater fisherman. He also enjoyed bowling, woodworking and model railroading.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Manuel "Fran" Francis Ferris, Jr. and his wife Gena of Middletown, RI; a brother Henry Ferris of Pittsfield, MA; a half brother Anthony Ferris of Newport, RI, a half sister Evelyn; his granddaughter Dena King and her husband Joshua of Middletown, a grandson Bryan Ferris of Middletown, RI; a great-granddaughter Lily Rose King of Middletown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late James Ferris and Mary Simas, and half brother of the late Mario Ferris and Lillian.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2006, at 9:30 a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.
Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2006, from 4-7 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home.
