E-Editions on Your Mobile Device
The e-edition is now available in e-book format. This means you can download the e-edition as a single, compact file to your mobile phone, PDA or other device and then read it even if you are no longer connected to the Internet. E-Book editions are provided in Mobi format, and software that can read this format is available on a wide range of mobile devices.
Below are complete instructions for getting started. It is recommended that you view this page on a computer while performing each step of the instructions on your mobile device.
Installing e-book software
You will need to install a program on your mobile device that can read e-books. Mobipocket Reader is available for a number of different mobile devices. You can download it by going to the following web address on your mobile device: m.mobipocket.com.
Downloading e-book editions
- Once you have e-book software installed, enter the following web address on your mobile device: www.newportdailynews.com/ebook.php. (It may be easier to copy the link and email it to your device.) This will take you to the e-book editions page.
- Select the "E-Books" link next to "Mobile Device" to go to the downloads page (you may be asked for your e-edition username and password). This page will list all the dates for which the e-edition is currently available. It is recommended that you bookmark this page so that you don't have to enter the address again.
- Click on the link for the date you want. Save the file in the e-books directory that was created when you installed your e-book reader software. (On Blackberry devices this is usually "Device Memory/home/user/eBooks"; on Windows Mobile it is usually "My Device/ebooks.")
- Note for BlackBerry users: make sure the file is downloaded with the ".mobi" file extension; you may have to rename the file.
You can also download e-book editions to a computer and transfer them to your device via cable.
Reading an e-edition
- Run the e-book application you installed and a list of your e-books should be displayed. If there are no e-books listed, make sure the files were downloaded into the ebooks directory. Alternatively, you can browse your device's file system to an e-book file and open it directly.
- Navigating through an e-edition varies widely by device. On most devices the left and right arrow keys move to the previous and next pages, and the up and down arrow keys scroll through the links on each page. On touch screen devices, the page is normally turned by swiping a finger horizontally across the screen, and links are selected by touching them directly.
- You can adjust the font size and other options by opening the menu while in the reader.
- Note for BlackBerry users: it is recommended that you change the e-book font by opening the menu in Mobipocket Reader and selecting Settings -> Font. Then change the Font Family to "BBAlpha Sans."
