Martha W. Leonard
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mrs. Martha Whipkey Leonard
of Columbia, SC, passed peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, July 21, 2010. She succumbed to the eventual effects of successive strokes as well as a connective tissue disorder. At the time of her death, Mrs. Leonard was a resident of Wildewood Downs, a nursing center in Columbia, South Carolina.
Mrs. Leonard was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on April 13, 1930. She was the only child of Shirley and Esther (Carroll) Whipkey. She graduated from Wheeling High School in 1948. Upon graduation, Mrs. Leonard took a job with Wheeling Steel. She married David G. Leonard of Elyria, Ohio on Valentines Day in 1959. Shortly thereafter, the young couple moved to Rhode Island where they resided in the cities of Warwick, Jamestown and Portsmouth. Both Mr. and Mrs. Leonard moved to South Carolina in 2007.
Mrs. Leonard was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Her husband, her two sons, Paul and Joel Leonard, and five grandchildren survive her.
She is fondly remembered for her outgoing and quirky personality. At age 68, Mrs. Leonard bought herself a fire-red, PT Cruiser with a sunroof and flames. The car was a statement of her personality and her style.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.) at 825 Boston Neck Road in North Kingstown, RI. The visitation will be followed by a brief, graveside service at the Cedar Cemetery in Jamestown, RI.
Following the graveside service, a luncheon reception will be held at the Portuguese-American Club at 11 Pemberton Avenue in Jamestown, RI. Guests are encouraged to attend the reception and celebrate Mrs. Leonards life over some chowder, stuffies and ice-cold beer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Lupus Foundation of America are appreciated.
