J. Arthur Currey
MIDDLETOWN - J. Arthur Currey,
82, of Middletown, RI, formerly of Stony Brook, NY passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 27, 2010.
Born John Arthur Currey on November 27, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY to Ernest and Susan Currey. “Art” grew up in a loving extended family with 13 children. He often fondly recounted his days growing up in “Flatbush” in the 30’s and 40’s. Art was a devout Catholic and proud American who loved God and country. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army in World War II and the Korean War. When he returned to the US he worked in sales in NY and PA. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He provided a safe and happy family life for his two children who loved him dearly. He was a loving father and grandfather who had a tendency to exaggerate the achievements of his children and grandchildren. He fancied a good tale and, as is the case with many who consider themselves storytellers, the accuracy of the details was far less important than the desired result…making people smile. He was a man who truly appreciated an ice-cold beer, most commonly referred to as the “Nectar of the Gods”. He had a wonderful tenor voice and he enjoyed singing with barbershop quartets and anyone else who shared his soft spot for song. Art was kind-natured and never failed to see the good in everyone.
J. Arthur Currey is survived by his son Stephen Currey and his wife Kristin and their sons Nathaniel, Benjamin and John of Middletown, RI, his daughter Diane Bridges and her husband Frank Clause of Crested Butte, CO, his brother Ernest “Bud” Currey and his wife Elaine of Sandy, UT and his sister Jacqueline DiVirgilio and her husband Paul of East Brunswick, NJ, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A mass to celebrate his life will take place at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church in Middletown, RI on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 9 a.m. A veteran’s memorial service will take place in New York at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Long Island State Veteran’s Home, 100 Patriot’s Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790 are welcome.
