George A. and Evelyn E. (Rego) SpiratosNewport ~ George A. and Evelyn E. (Rego) Spiratos of Newport, Rhode Island celebrated their 50th anniversary.
The couple was married at St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church in Newport, Rhode Island on June 10th, 1960.
The Spiratos have four children: Katherine Carbone and her husband Christopher Carbone of Newport, RI, Stephanie Synnott and her husband Christopher Synnott of Middletown, RI, Penelope Spiratos of Reading, MA, Anthony Spiratos of Newport, RI. They also have three grandchildren: Kristin, Caroline & Christopher Synnott.
At the time they met, all island students’ attended high school at the “old Rogers High” near City Hall, now Thompson Middle School. It was a story of country girl meets city boy. Evelyn grew up on a farm in Middletown and George gre up in the heart of downtown Newport.
After they were married they lived for a few years in Jamestown, when the only way to travel to the island was via ferry. They soon returned back to Newport where they have lived ever since.
A graduate of URI, George owned an insurance business in the 1970’s and later became a math teacher at Thompson Junior High School and Rogers High School. Since retiring from teaching, George has been involved as a chanter at St. Spyridon’s Church, as a member of the Broadway Improvement Organization (BIO), and with other local projects.
A dedicated homemaker, Evelyn raised her four children and also has volunteered with many community organizations over the years and still devotes much time to the community, including the Newport Hospital Auxiliary and the Philoptochos Society of St. Spyridon’s Church.
The couple has traveled to Puerto Rico, Aruba and the Cayman Islands. They enjoy local trips for seeing shows at the Providence Performing Arts Center or relaxing at Hazard’s Beach in Newport during the summer months.
The family gathered on June 13th to celebrate George & Evelyn’s 50th Anniversary at the home of Stephanie & Christopher Synnott in Middletown, RI.
